BS Nursing

Nursing is a profession within the health care sector focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life. Nurses may be differentiated from other health care providers by their approach to patient care, training, and scope of practice. Nurses practice in many specialties with differing levels of prescription authority. Many nurses provide care within the ordering scope of physicians, and this traditional role has shaped the public image of nurses as care providers. However, nurse practitioners are permitted by most jurisdictions to practice independently in a variety of settings. In the postwar period, nurse education has undergone a process of diversification towards advanced and specialized credentials, and many of the traditional regulations and provider roles are changing.

Nurses develop a plan of care, working collaboratively with physicians, therapists, the patient, the patient’s family and other team members, that focuses on treating illness to improve quality of life. In the United States and the United Kingdom, advanced practice nurses, such as clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners, diagnose health problems and prescribe medications and other therapies, depending on individual state regulations. Nurses may help coordinate the patient care performed by other members of a multidisciplinary health care team such as therapists, medical practitioners and dietitians. Nurses provide care both interdependently, for example, with physicians, and independently as nursing professionals.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) is awarded to the nurse who has earned a four-year academic degree in the science and principles of nursing, granted by a tertiary education university or similarly accredited school.

Nursing and midwifery are well known and highly reputable allied health care professions world-wide. They are highly paid allied health professionals and are always in demand. According to certain surveys it has been concluded that Pakistan is facing shortfall of nurses i.e. both Male and female. As per standard protocols there must be 1 nurse for 4 beds and unfortunately in our government hospitals there are merely 2 to three nurses available in ward of 30 to 40 beds.

According to The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) current Occupational Outlook Handbook, the median expected annual salary for registered nurses is $68,450. Actual salaries will vary greatly based on your specialization, location, years of experience, and a variety of other factors.

Approximately there is shortfall of 20 to 25000 nurses in Pakistan. In order to overcome this dilemma, Government should establish more teaching institutes for nurses and must increase their number in hospitals.

Graduates of BS Nursing can pursue their post-graduation i.e. MSC/MS/PG. Dip/PHD in hospital care management, Public health, Nurse Anesthetist, Midwifery, Neonatal Nurse Practice, Family Nurse Practice, Psychiatric Nurse Practice and Clinical Nurse Specialization. MS in public health and hospital care management are being offered by various universities in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar but MS in other fields is only available in Lahore and Islamabad with minimum number of seats which is certainly not in the vicinity of every student, due to lack of institutions offering post-graduate courses students are compelled to apply in foreign universities to continue their studies as a simple graduate suffers a lot in the field and has few chances to excel in professional career. It’s not possible for every student to go abroad either due to family reservations or due to excessive financial burden. Government needs to pay strong attention regarding this dilemma of our society in order to meet international standards.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics there is going to be continued and significant growth in the field of nursing over the coming years. Although this means that having a Nursing degree is always going to serve you well, there are certain specializations in which you are almost guaranteed to be successful.

After completing either the LPN or either RN education programs in the United States, graduates are eligible to sit for a licensing examination to become a nurse, the passing of which is required for the nursing license. The National Licensure Examination (NCLEX) test is a standardized exam (including multiple choice, select all that apply, fill in the blank and “hot spot” questions) that nurses take to become licensed. It costs two-hundred dollars to take the NCLEX. It examines a nurse’s ability to properly care for a client.
