What is Anesthesia technology?

BS hons Anesthesia Technology

An anesthetic technician is an allied healthcare worker who assists with the administration and monitoring of anesthesia and has an extensive knowledge of anesthesia techniques, instruments, supplies, and technology. Anesthetic technicians are mainly employed by anesthetic departments or operating theatre suites, but can be found in other areas of clinical practice including emergency departments, intensive care units (ICU) and day surgery clinics.

BS hons. Anesthesia technology was started almost a decade ago in renowned medical institutes and universities of Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta. Anesthesia technologists can work in government and federal sector as grade 16/17 professionals though they have only limited number of seats in THQ and DHQ hospitals despite of huge workload. It’s solely government’s responsibility to acknowledge the credibility of allied health professionals by increasing their seats in government hospitals and raising their salary packages so that they can acquire their basic rights. Anesthesia technologists are part of a surgical team. They assist anesthesiologists in managing a patient’s pain during surgery by administering anesthesia and monitoring patient status. Anesthesia technologists are surgical technologists who specialize in assisting anesthesiologists. These professionals heavily assist in pre-surgery by setting up and sterilizing any necessary equipment, taking patient vital signs, and helping anesthesiologists into their sterile gowns. Additionally, before the procedure, anesthesia technologists ensure that all anesthesia equipment functions properly to keep patients sedated. During the actual surgery, anesthesia technologists may observe the vital signs of a patient, but primarily hand materials to doctors and perform minor duties, like applying dressings or monitoring operating equipment.

Graduates of BS hons Anesthesia technology can pursue their post-graduation i.e. MS/PHD/PG .Dip  in hospital care management, Disaster management, advanced clinical practice- pediatric anesthesia, Anesthesia and Peri-operative medicine, Regional anesthesia, Managing care in Peri-operative and anesthesia practice, Clinical management of pain and public health. MS in public health and hospital care management are being offered by various universities in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar but MS in other fields is only available in Foreign countries which is certainly not in the vicinity of every student, due to lack of institutions offering post-graduate courses students are compelled to apply in foreign universities to continue their studies as a simple graduate suffers a lot in the field and has few chances to excel in professional career. It’s not possible for every student to go abroad either due to family reservations or due to excessive financial burden. Government needs to pay strong attention regarding this dilemma of our society in order to meet international standards

There are multiple universities in Germany, Australia, Canada, Sweden and America that offer post-graduation courses on partial and full scholarships, their entire detail is available on the sites of universities. Moreover students can work with foreign professors as research associates and research internees. In order to do clinical practice, license acquisition is necessary, there are various competency exams for above mentioned countries such as PCE for Canada, HCPC for UK and MOH for UAE and middle-eastern countries.

Success bows to them who keeps strong faith in their dreams and never give up on their goals.

Job Placement

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there were 99,800 surgical technology positions, including anesthesia technology positions, in the country in 2014. The BLS also reports the highest number of surgical technology positions were in general and surgical hospitals.

The BLS predicted that employment opportunities in this field would grow by about 15% between 2014-2024, a rate that’s much faster than average when compared to all occupations. This growth is largely due to an increase in aging populations and the number of surgical procedures they receive. Those anesthesia technologists who hold certification were mostly likely to experience better employment opportunities. The BLS reported in May 2015 that the median annual salary earned by all kinds of anesthesia technologists was $44,330.

The 15% growth rate expected for all anesthesia technologists for 2014-2024 is much faster than average when compared to all occupations. Applicants who complete a certificate, diploma or associate’s degree can compete for jobs as an anesthesia technologist.

Current Health minister has ordered to increase recruitments of anesthesia technologists in government Hospitals as they are highly required in surgical procedures.

Government sector: Grade 16/17 Professional.

Seats: 2 to 3 in Operation theaters of all surgical Departments in DHQ and THQ Hospitals. (Soon their number will be increased)

Private sector:

Private Hospitals.

Teaching Hospitals as Educationists and Clinical Instructors.

Learning Outcomes

Following competencies will be expected from a student completing 4 years degree course in BS Anesthesia Technology. The student should be proficient to:

  • Provide quality patient care in routine as well as advanced Operative procedures.
  • Assessing and interpreting prescriptions.
  • Consulting to jointly consider changes that are beneficial to the patient.
  • Evaluate performance characteristics of equipment.
  • Assist anesthesiologists in managing a patient’s pain during surgery by administering anesthesia and monitoring patient status.
  • Assist in pre-surgery by setting up and sterilizing any necessary equipment, taking patient vital signs, and helping anesthesiologists into their sterile gowns.
  • Prepare equipment needed for the patient to safely undergo anesthesia. This involves checking and setting up the anesthetic machine.
  • Preparing intravenous drugs and intravenous therapy administration equipment.
  • Preparing a range of devices to maintain the patient’s airway (e.g. laryngeal masks, endotracheal tube) communicating with the patient when they arrive into the operating theatre
  • Establish peripheral intravenous access.
  • Anesthetic monitoring to help assess the patients’ condition whilst under anesthesia. This may include electrocardiography (ECG), blood pressure and oxygen saturation devices. The monitoring of other parameters such as anesthesia depth monitors (EEG, bispectral index etc.) may also be necessary.
  • Apply the principles of management, organizational behavior, supervision, budgeting, human resource management, and labor relations in Operation Theaters.
  • Enhance human interaction and performance in the clinical environment by integrating liberal education principles.
  • The Anesthesia Technologists should be able to integrate seven areas of key importance in the dental departments. The seven areas include patient care, use of technology, optimization of clinical services, clinical responsibility, organization, quality assurance and education and training.

Objectives

Anesthesia Technology education and training should enable the student to:

  • Develop accuracy and meticulousness to attain high levels of ethics and technical proficiency.
  • Assess the technical and non-technical skills in a standardized and reproducible environment.
  • Strengthen the decision power and exercise appropriate judgment skills, to be applied especially during crisis.
  • Develop good leadership, problem solving and administrative skills.
  • Develop and analyze innovative strategies for effective communication with the patients and the healthcare personnel.
  • Demonstrate interdisciplinary team building strategies for effective co-ordination between various Allied Health Disciplines.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the basic concepts of professional behavior and legal implications of the work environment.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge of his / her role in health care delivery system.
  • Establish and maintain continuing education as a function of growth and maintenance of professional competence
